Morty Smith from the popular sci-fi show Rick and Morty comes to Multiversus as a playable character with many moves and perks to defeat opponents, but also many costume cosmetics you can unlock. This space and dimensional traveling teenager comes equipped with many strange tools that can enhance his strength. Some devices provided by his grandfather can also be unpredictable, confusing enemies with unorthodox attacks.

Morty was released as one of the many characters in MultiVersus added to the open beta for the game before its official release. The younger half of the Back to the Future parody is classified as a "Bruiser" archetype among the characters on the Season 1 roster. Bruisers are typically easier to play, using heavy attacks that deal a lot of damage to opponents in exchange for reduced mobility.

Learn Every Basic Attack And Special Move

Platform fighting games have unique gameplay where the attack or special move you perform is changed based on directional inputs. For example, pressing the button for a character's basic attack in its neutral state activates one move, but pressing the same input and a specific direction activates another. Furthermore, characters have a combination of moves in the air and on the ground in MultiVersus.

Morty also has an exclusive passive trait called Sci-Fi Explosive Technology, which is tied to the many Grenades the character uses in some of their moves. Grenades are explosives that blow up shortly after being thrown, damaging whoever gets caught in the blast radius. Morty can give Grenades to allies whenever he overlaps with them, allowing your teammate to throw an explosive in the direction of their next attack.

Even though Morty does not have many attacks or special moves that directly assist allies, unlike his grandfather Rick Sanchez in MultiVersus, the Sci-Fi Explosive Technology passive trait helps your teammate automatically during a fight.

Basic Attack

Ground

Air

Neutral Attack

(Aw Geez, Snakes!) Morty fires a laser projectile. If any active Grenades are out, the laser will target each Grenade, detonating them on collision. Without an active Grenade, the laser will split into two snake projectiles that launch in opposite directions vertically. Cooldown applies to the snakes.

(Aw Geez, Air Snakes!) Same as Ground.

Side Attack

(Unresolved Anger Issues) Morty pummels enemies with a combo of punches from Armothy, finishing by swinging a Hammer Morty. Morty can combo into a laser whip instead by pressing neutral input after the second hit of the combo.

(Barbarian Instincts) Morty delivers a combo of two axe swings, both of which can be charged.

Up Attack

(Aw Geez, More Snakes!) Similar to the Neutral Attack, except Morty fires the laser upward and the snakes split horizontally.

(Power of Fire!) Morty uses the power of an elemental ring to hit enemies upward and Ignite them for additional damage over time.

Down Attack

(Plumbus Time!) Morty begins running his plumbus over the ground, hitting enemies and moving freely. Hold the input to keep the plumbus out. The plumbus will cleanse allies of negative status conditions and apply the "Weakened" debuff affliction to enemies.

(Armothy Assault) Morty pounds downward with Armothy.

Special Move

Ground

Air

Neutral Special

(It's A Grenade, I Think) Morty throws a Grenade projectile. You can throw multiple of these until you run out of ammo.

(Yep, That's A Grenade) Same as Ground.

Side Special

(Power of Earth!) Morty summons an earth pillar from the ground in front of him. Morty can charge this move to increase how far in front of him the pillar appears. Striking a Grenade with a pillar will split it into two separate Grenades.

(Another Portal?) Morty receives Armor and peeks into a portal before hopping in. Hold the input to aim where Morty will appear after hopping through the portal. The portal Morty exits from will remain, increasing the speed of allied projectiles that pass by it. Cooldown applies, but only to the persistent exit portal.

Up Special

(Uh, Auto-Pilot?) Morty calls in the spaceship as a platform that moves upward. Cooldown applies to this special move.

(Uh, Auto-Pilot?) Same as Ground.

Down Special

(Temporal Back-Up) Morty creates a save point at his position. After some time, Morty will warp back to the save point and heal himself and his allies slightly. Press this special move input again to immediately warp back and leave a Grenade at Morty's position before the warp. If Morty's ally is about to be rung out while the save point is active, they will instead warp back to Morty. Cooldown applies to this move.

(Temporal Back-Up) Same as Ground. Morty can create a save point in the air without using up his other air special moves.

As you can see in the above video by YouTube creator RPG LABS, Temporal Back-Up and Another Portal are the two special moves Morty has that are the trickiest to use. Unlike other Bruiser characters, Morty has a lot of ways of manipulating his position on a stage, letting you close in on opponents quickly. When combined with Grenades and snake projectiles, Morty's portals can alter the course of a fight unexpectedly.

Combine Signature Buffs with Basic Bonuses

MultiVersus Morty Guide: Costumes, Perks, Moves & How To Unlock (2)

As you reach higher levels of Mastery with any character, you'll end up unlocking passive buffs called Perks that can be equipped to that fighter before you jump into another match. Perks are divided into Signature, Offense, Defense, and Utility bonuses that can shape MultiVersus' strongest fighters. Signature Perks are usually the best ones you can unlock since they provide exclusive buffs to character-specific attacks and moves.

Morty has three Signature Perksand three Basic Perks you can obtain from the character's Mastery Levels, which are best gained through winning matches. All Offense, Defense, and Utility Perks have smaller benefits, but they are still worth unlocking to improve Morty's effectiveness in battle. You are able to put multiple Perks on a character once you unlock them to form a unique build for that fighter in MultiVersus.

Description

Oh, That's Still A Grenade

Signature

Reach Mastery Level 10 with Morty.

The explosion radius of Morty's Grenades is increased based on their cook duration. Grenades thrown by Morty's allies always have the maximum explosion radius.

Deadshot

Offense

Reach Mastery Level 11 with Morty.

Your team deals 5% increased damage with projectiles.

Extra Fleeb Juice

Signature

Reach Mastery Level 12 with Morty.

Morty's plumbus leaves the floor extra squeaky clean.

Coffeezilla

Utility

Reach Mastery Level 13 with Morty.

Your team receives a 10% reduced ability cooldown duration.

The Oh, That's Still A Grenade Signature Perk is by far the best one to use with Morty due to how it alters the already strong Grenades used by the character. While Morty tends to use physical attacks to ring out enemies, the Grenades act as devices to make the stage dangerous and start the fight on Morty's terms. The stronger those Grenades are, the more useful they become as you try to force opponents into bad positions.

The Grenade boosting Signature Perk works extremely well in 2v2 battles as well, as it causes any Grenade thrown by your ally to already have the maximum explosion radius. However, you need to be careful not to accidentally damage each other with this buff.

The Coffeezilla and Armor Crush Perks are also strong for Morty since they give the character ways to use weaker abilities more often. Morty's Side Special move in particular can be charged fully with the Perk to destroy opponent's relying too heavily on Armor. Reduced cooldown on abilities also gives Morty more opportunities to use Grenades and other projectiles, which can be hard for enemies to parry in MultiVersus.

Morty Combat Tips & Strategies

Surprise Opponents With Difficult Set-Ups

MultiVersus Morty Guide: Costumes, Perks, Moves & How To Unlock (4)

Morty is one of the trickier Bruisers to play in MultiVersus, but not for the reasons you may expect. While Morty does suffer from a general lack of mobility common in his character class, he has more ways of moving around a stage than most. Use the Down Special and air version of the Side Special moves to get around the battlefield and surprise opponents with sudden shifts using Morty's various portal activations.

One of the most overlooked moves in Morty's arsenal is his Up Special which summons the spaceship from Rick and Morty as an additional platform to the stage. Use the spaceship to launch Grenades and other projectiles at your enemies, as this location may be harder for an opponent's character to reach. Due to the power of Morty's Grenades, you'll want to find a safe place to create these projectiles as the match goes on.

Morty's Up Special move can also be used near the top edge of a stage to trap an opponent's character as the spaceship goes up to leave. Enemy characters caught on the spaceship can be rung out as the vehicle leaves quickly from the battlefield.

Attack opponents frequently with combo attacks that deal a lot of damage from Morty's basic strikes such as "Unresolved Anger Issues" and "Armothy Assault." Similar to other heavy hitters like Black Adam in MultiVersus, Morty's core strength comes from being able to raise an enemy character's health percentage fast.

One of the best strategies for fighting as Morty is to always have at least one Grenade out on a stage to disrupt your opponent and alter Morty's Neutral Attack. While the snake projectiles are fast and unpredictable, being able to alter Morty's blaster to target a Grenade allows him to control an area's hazards. Since enemies may expect a direct physical assault from a Bruiser, a Grenade's explosion could catch them off guard.

How To Unlock Morty In MultiVersus

Spend In-Game Currency Or Earn Prestige Points

MultiVersus Morty Guide: Costumes, Perks, Moves & How To Unlock (5)

You can unlock Morty in a few different ways - by spending 3,000 Gold or 700 Gleamium, by using a Character Ticket, or by spending Prestige Points in the Prestige Shop. Gold and Gleamium are the game's two main currencies, with Gold being earned from playing basic matches and toasting your opponents. Gleamium is much harder to obtain, as it only appears in the Battle Pass for MultiVersus.

While you can spend real-world money on Gleamium to unlock Morty, it may be better to spend that kind of cash on a Character Ticket. This item unlocks a character of your choice instantly, but the Ticket cannot be used on anything else. Gleamium is often used to make other purchases besides character unlocks, such as new cosmetics, player banners, ring-out animations, and so on.

Many of the cosmetics offered in MultiVersus come from the Prestige Shop, a place where you can buy many changes to a fighter's appearance. Prestige Points spent in this shop are gained by obtaining cosmetics, either through the Battle Pass or the Shop itself. While it may take some time to earn the Points you need, enough effort will always be worth it to unlock a new character to your roster.

Spend Gleamium To Unlock Variants

There are only two variant costumes for Morty in MultiVersus, but both are extremely rare alternate looks that change the character's appearance and dialogue during a match. The Epic variant President Morty and the Legendary variant Evil Morty can be unlocked by spending Gleamium. President Morty costs 500 Gleamium while Evil Morty costs 1,500 Gleamium in the game's Prestige Shop.

No gameplay changes come from these costumes, but buying each of them will earn you a lot of Prestige Points due to their rarity. This may give you enough Points to buy another character, or additional costumes for other fighters you've unlocked. Once you have every costume for Morty in MultiVersus, you can use them along with his Perks to dominate a fight in style as you learn how to use the character's strong moves.
