One Piece: The Powers and Abilities of Kozuki Momonosuke, Explained (2024)

Summary

  • Kozuki Momonosuke possesses the Voice of All Things, allowing him to communicate telepathically and control Zunesha, a giant elephant.
  • Momonosuke has an artificial Devil Fruit power that replicates Kaido's abilities, including the ability to create Flame Clouds and transform into a dragon.
  • As a member of the Kozuki Clan, Momonosuke is skilled in swordsmanship, possesses Observation Haki, and can translate Poneglyphs, making him a formidable player with the potential to challenge the World Government.

One Piece's Wano Country Arc is the longest in anime history, giving the sequence plenty of time to showcase the series' large cast of characters. One of the most important individuals during the arc is Kozuki Momonosuke, the young boy that joins the Straw Hat Pirates during the Punk Hazard Arc. At first, Momo lies about his true backstory, but as he spends more time with Luffy and his crew, he reveals more and more about his history. Eventually, it is revealed that his guardian, Kin'emon, isn't actually his father; rather, Momonosuke is the son of the legendary swordsman Kozuki Oden, who previously served alongside both Gol D. Roger and Edward Newgate.

As the son of Oden, Momonosuke inherits his father's natural talent, legendary sword, and ultra-rare ability: the Voice of All Things. In addition to this, he possesses the powers of an artificial Devil Fruit, which is eventually revealed to be a near-perfect copy of the Mythical Zoan-type Devil Fruit used by Kaido. With the final saga of One Piece and the opening of Wano's borders fast approaching, the Straw Hat Pirates will need all the help they can get for the Shogun of Wano Country.

Updated on October 14, 2023, by Kennedy King: The Egghead Island Arc is moving at a breakneck pace, and given the recent appearances by the World Government's most powerful figures, it's clear that an all-out war is preparing to break out across the Grand Line. Kozuki Momonosuke's strength will be needed now more than ever, so hopefully he can take advantage of his impressive potential.

Momonosuke's Voice of All Things Allows Telepathic Communication

One Piece: The Powers and Abilities of Kozuki Momonosuke, Explained (2)

Like his father, Kozuki Oden, as well as Gol D. Roger and Monkey D. Luffy, Momonosuke can hear and understand the Voice of All Things. This ability first manifests during the Zou Arc when the boy demonstrates the ability to communicate with Zunesha, the giant elephant carrying the Kingdom of Zou. The elephant asks for permission to defend itself from Jack the Drought and his subordinates, and when Momonosuke grants his request, the beast promptly levels its attackers. The son of Kozuki Oden continues to use the Voice of All Things throughout the Wano Country, creating a telepathic link between him and Monkey D. Luffy.

After Kaido tosses Monkey D. Luffy into the ocean, he subconsciously communicates his intention to come back and defeat the Emperor of the Sea to Momonosuke. The range of the Voice of All Things is currently unknown, but it's extremely wide judging by Zunesha's ability to communicate with Momonosuke during the Raid on Onigashima. To lend support in the ongoing battle, Zunesha travels across the ocean to come to Wano, and while he's still miles away, he and Momonosuke briefly talk to one another using the ability.

Momonosuke's Devil Fruit Is the Artificial Version of Kaido's

One Piece: The Powers and Abilities of Kozuki Momonosuke, Explained (4)

When Momonosuke is first introduced in the Punk Hazard Arc, he is in his Zoan form, which takes the appearance of a fairly small, unassuming pink dragon. His strength and abilities are similarly underwhelming, and despite his draconic body, he's unable to fly or breathe fire. However, after traveling with the Straw Hat Pirates and watching them fight for his people, his powers slowly start to manifest, resulting in the development of a wide range of techniques that are very similar to those of the Fish-Fish Fruit, Model: Azure Dragon that is wielded by Kaido. One of these abilities, referred to as Flame Clouds, creates mysterious orange-colored clouds that are strong enough to support the weight of Momonosuke and his allies. At first, the Shogun of Wano uses these Flame Clouds sparingly, but by the end of the Wano Country Arc, he is able to support the entire weight of Onigashima with their power.

Even with the events of the Egghead Island Arc taken into account, One Piece has yet to truly explore the devastating potential of artificial Devil Fruits. Dr. Vegapunk considered Momonosuke's Devil Fruit a failure simply because it transforms its user into a pink dragon instead of a blue one, so it at least feels safe to say that artificial Devil Fruits are fairly effective at replicating the fruit that they were based on. Once the Shogun of Wano's body is transformed to reflect his true age, the dragon that he transforms into is extremely similar to the one that Kaido utilizes. In fact, Momonosuke's form is even able to damage Kaido with a bite, which is a feat that has only been accomplished by One Piece's most powerful fighters. Momonosuke is transformed into his actual age with Shinobu's Juku Juku no Mi, his dragon is almost identical in size and appearance except for size, horns, and skin color. The gigantic dragon has massive strength and durability, with the ability to easily hurt Kaido with a bite, who is also in his dragon form.

The Kozuki Clan's History Of Excellence

One Piece: The Powers and Abilities of Kozuki Momonosuke, Explained (6)

As a child, Kozuki Momonosuke learns basic swordsmanship from his father (as is customary for the Kozuki Clan) before Oden meets his unfortunate demise. Although Momonosuke inherits Oden's Ame-no-Habakiri — one of the 21 Great Grade Blades — he has yet to use the legendary sword in an actual battle, making it difficult to truly comprehend his skills. As a child, the Shogun of Wano trains relentlessly using a wooden sword, as he believes himself to be unworthy of his father's Ame-no-Habakiri. Later on, he also receives guidance and advice from Zoro during the three-day period before the Raid on Onigashima. However, even in his grown-up form, Momonosuke is only seen carrying the sword, and in his fight with Admiral Ryokugyu, he mostly relies on his Devil Fruit in battle. Nonetheless, as much as he admires his father, Momo is bound to train more and become truly worthy of the legendary sword.

In addition to his swordsmanship, Kozuki Momonosuke can use Observation Haki, as shown in the Wano Country Arc. During Episode 1024 of One Piece, Momonosuke easily figures out the state of affairs in the Raid on Onigashima, surprising both Shinobu and Yamato with his ability to perceive his surroundings. This development suggests a natural affinity for Observation Haki, which would make sense given Momonosuke's attunement to the Voice of All Things. However, the greatest talent that he inherited from the Kozuki Clan is his ability to translate Poneglyphs. These ancient objects tell the true history of the Void Century, and when combined, they provide the location to the final island of the Grand Line, Laugh Tale. With this ability, Momonosuke is more than just a talented citizen of Wano Country — he's a major player with the potential to usurp the entire World Government.

Momonosuke's Other Skills and Future Potential in One Piece

One Piece: The Powers and Abilities of Kozuki Momonosuke, Explained (8)

After gaining a mature body, Momonosuke now has much better control over his ability to create Flame Clouds and is capable of flying at high speeds with their help. Initially, Momonosuke faces some lingering acrophobia, but he soon gets over it after confronting Kaido and now has no obvious weakness when it comes to using his Devil Fruit abilities. The Shogun of Wano shows his might in his battle against Admiral Ryokugyu by using the same Bolo Breath attack as Kaido, which successfully damages the Admiral's Logia form. Although the Straw Hat Pirates leave Momonosuke and Yamato behind when they depart from Wano, this only gives Momonosuke even more time to master his many talents.

There's no denying that Kozuki Momonosuke, as well as the entire Kozuki Clan, have experienced more than their fair share of tragedy. Before Oden is able to spend much time with his son, he is tragically killed by Kaido and Orochi's combined efforts, seemingly leaving Momonosuke without a father figure. However, Oden's father, Kozuki Sukiyaki, is revealed to be alive at the end of the Wano Country Arc, and he is more than capable of teaching Momonosuke considering that he is a former Shogun himself. Although the series has yet to specify it, the fact that the Kozuki Clan values the well-being of Wano, as well as their legacy, is proof that Momonosuke will do a fine job of serving the people that he represents.
